Al-An’am Verses 56 – 60
“Say! (O’ Our Apostle Muhammad!) “I am forbidden to worship those whom ye call besides God;” Say Thou: “I follow not your inclinations for then indeed I should have gone astray and I will not be of those who are guided (aright).” (6:56)
“Say thou: “Verily I have manifest proof from my Lord and you belied it; I have not with me that (chastisement) which ye hasten1for; the judgment belongeth (to none) but unto God; Who declareth the truth and He is the best decider.” (6:57)
“Say thou, “If it were with me2, what ye hasten for, certainly would have been decided the matter between me and you3; and God knoweth best the unjust.” (6:58)
“And with Him are the keys (of the treasures) of the unseen - knoweth it not anyone but He; and He (alone) knoweth what is in the land and the sea; and (there) falleth not (even) a leaf (of a tree) but He knoweth it, nor a grain in the darkness (in the deepest parts) of the earth, nor anything wet or dry but (it is) in a clear Book4.”(6:59)
“And He it is who taketh you away at night (in sleep), and He knoweth what ye acquire5in the day, then He raiseth you up therein that a pre-fixed term (of life) be fulfilled; then unto Him is your (ultimate) return, then He will declare unto you what ye were doing6.” (6:60)
Commentary
Verse 58
That which you desire to hasten, i.e., the chastisement from God.
Verse 59
‘Mafatih’ is the plural for ‘Miftuh’, i.e., treasury or a repository as well as for ‘Miftah’ meaning a Key - i.e., God alone is the Master of everything unseen (as well as the seen) - i.e., everything (both manifest and hidden) is in the ready knowledge of God, and everything takes place according to His independent will.
About the ‘Kitabin Mubeen’, i.e., clear, open or the manifesting Book - it is reported by Ayashi that Hazrat Musa Ibn Jafer the seventh Holy Imam said that once Amir al-Mu’minin ‘Ali Ibn Abi Talib, the First Holy Imam, in explaining the Verse 13:43 - said that the ‘Kitab’ or the Book mentioned in the Verse, the knowledge of which is assigned to the ones cited as a witness to the apostleship of the Holy Prophet along with God, and the Book mentioned in 36:12, to have been accommodated in the manifest or the declared Imam, is this same clear and open Book mentioned in this Verse which contains everything wet and dry. It means that the one mentioned in 13:43 must be the same ‘Imam ul-Mubeen’ - the personality mentioned in 36:12, i.e., the one who knows about everything in the universe, and he can never be any one, whom the people choose at their own fancy, but only he whom God Himself entrusts the knowledge.
Verse 60
‘Yatawaffakum’, i.e., takes you away. This Verse clearly indicates that ‘Tawaffa’ cannot always mean death. It does not always mean taking away of the soul or the spirit. If the word is interpreted as taking away of the soul or the spirit what interpretation can be given to the word used in this Verse for the individual asleep is not rendered lifeless. The word ‘Yatawaffa’ used in this Verse is purposefully misinterpreted by some to mean actual death, just to somehow establish the death of Jesus just to serve a fanciful argument.
