The event of Ghadir Khumm (Arabic: حديث الغدير; Persian: رویداد غدیر خم) occurred in March 632. While returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Islamic prophet Muhammad gathered all the Muslims who were with him and gave a long sermon. In the sermon, Muhammad announced that Ali ibn Abi Talib would be his successor.

Such paintings are never real pictures of the Imam (AS) but just imaginations of the painters. In some cultures like Turkey, Iran, Iraq etc they use such paintings to remember the Imam, while in many other Muslim cultures like in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc, they don't use it. I personally don't use such paintings for many reasons including not trusting the details of the paintings and to avoid misunderstandings among Muslims from different cultural backgrounds. Those who use such paintings are not doing a sinful act but trying to remember the Imam (AS) in their own cultural eye.

Ghadir Khumm . Sunni-Shi'a . Meaning

Regarding Ghadeer-e-Khum, does the term Maula signify love or friendship as suggested by some Sunni interpretations? What would be an appropriate counterargument?

The Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) made it very clear when he said : For whom so ever I am Maula, Ali is his Maula. Which means all authorities of the Prophet on Muslims are for Ali (AS) by order of Allah (SWT). Can any Muslim claim that love and friendship is the only right of the Prophet (SAWA) without his full authority on us with out following him? Love and friendship with out following is meaningless as Allah Says in Quran (Say: If you really love Allah, then follow me. (Aal Imran ; 31)

No real love with out following the beloved.

Hadeeth al-Ghadeer is very clear prophetic order to all Muslims to obligatory follow Ali (AS) as they are obliged to follow the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).

Is it mentioned in Sunni books that the Prophet SAWA said "Allah is my Mawla" in the Hadith of Ghadeer Khumm?

Yes. This Hadeeth of Ghadeer has been narrated by biggest number of companions who witnessed it and heard it from the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA). It is more than Mutawatir in Sunni books as well as Shia books.

1. Sibt ibn al-Jawazi said in his book Tathkirat al Khawas (Pg 30 & 31) "All the Ulama of Sirah have unanimously said that the incident of Ghadeer took place when the Prophet (SAWA) returned from Hajjatul Wida when he said in front of 120000 companions : Of whomsoever I am the Maula Ali is the Maula. The full Hadeeth mentions that the Prophet (SAWA) started his sermon "Allah is my Maula and I am the Maula of all Mo'meneen". Then he said am I not more entitled on the Mo'meneen than themselves upon themselves? All said "Yes". He (the Prophet SAWA) : For whomsoever I am his Maula, this Ali is his Maula.

2. Abu Ishaq al Tha'labi mentioned in his Tafseer that when this announcement was spread in different places a man by the name of al Harth ibn al No'man al Fahri came to the Masjid of the Prophet (SAWA) and objected on the announcement of Ghadeer and asked the Prophet (SAWA) : Is it from you or from Allah SWT? The Prophet (SAWA) became angry and his eyes became red and he said : By Allah SWT who is La Ilaha Illahu it his from Allah SWT and not from me.

3. In this Sahih Muslim (Vol 7, Pg 122 & 123) a Hadeeth narrated by Zaid ibn Arqam that the Prophet (SAWA) said in Ghadeer Khum : I am leaving among you two important things ; the first the Book and Allah SWT and my Ahlul Bayt (AS).

4. Ibn Hajar said : Hadeeth al Ghadeer is definitely authentic and there is no doubt about it.

5. An Nasai in al Khasa'is narrated from Zaid bin Arqam Hadeeth al-Ghadeer (Pg 39).

6. It was also narrated by al-Mohib al-Tabari in Thakha'ir al-Oqba.

7. Also in ibn al-Maghazili in al-Manaqib (Pg 29).

8. Also al-Muttaqi-al-Hindi in Kanz al-Ommaal (Vol 1 ; Pg 166)

9. Also al-Qurtubi in his Tafseer (Vol 18 ; Pg 287)

10, Also al-Haakim-al-Hasakani in Shawahid-al-Tanzeel (Vol 1 Pg 158)

Many other Sunni books have narrated Hadeeth al-Ghadee with the frase of Allah is my Mawla and I am Mawla of all believers and forwhom soever I am the Mawla, Ali is his Mawla.

and the day if the appointment of Aasif ibn Barkhia as the successor of Prophet Sulaiman.

What is the significance of the incident of Rohbah concerning the claim of mastership by Imam Ali (as)?

The incident of Rohbah الرحبة is very important to confirm the master ship of Ameerul Mo'mineen Ali (AS) by order from Allah (SWT) which was conveyed by the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) on the Day of Ghadeer in the presence of thousands of Muslims. Imam Ali (AS)'s rights were taken away by Saqeefah persons and he was ordered by the Prophet (SAWA) not to fight them to avoid civil war among Muslims. Some claimed that if Ali was really the master of all Muslims after the Prophet, then did he kept peaceful and did not fight for his right. Rohbah incident replied this question when Imam Ali (AS) asked many well known companions who witnessed the announcement of Ghadeer to give their witness about what they did see and hear from the Prophet in this matter.

Rohbah incident destroyed the claims of the enemies of Ali (AS).

Rohbah incident is narrated in many important Sunni books like al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by the well known Wahabi Shaikh, al-Albani, V. 4, P.338, and Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal 23609, and al-Mo'jam al-Kaberi by al-Tabaraani 4053 and Zawaa'id al-Musnad 950

In the sermon of Ghadeer, did the Prophet (saw) mention anything about Surah Insaan and Surah Asr?

Yes. In Sermon of Ghadeer the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) clearly mentioned : No one got witness of Allah that he is in the Paradise but Ali, in (HAL ATA 'ALAL INSAAN)(Sura al-INSAAN) which was revealed because of him (Ali) and never revealed for any one else, and no one was praised in this Sura but Ali. The Prophet (SAWA) also stated in the Sermon of Ghadeer: By Allah, Sura Al-'Assr was revealed in Ali (BUSMILLAH ARRAHMAAN ARRAHEEM, WAL 'ASSR, INNAL INSAANA LAFI KHUSR) except Ali who believed and accepted the truth and had patience. (Sermon of al-Ghadeer).

Asalamu Alaykom,

Alhamdulilah you have read about the incident of Ghadir and May Allah swt guide you to accept the divine authority of Imam Ali (as).

Firstly after becoming Shia, you will need to refer to the jurists who specialise in ahkaam or the Islamic laws. You will find some of the experts who say it is allowed to pray behind a Sunni imam provided that you recite the surahs yourself; others will say you can only do so out of taqiya (when one fears for their life & must conceal their faith).

Then you’ll find scholars who will say that one cannot pray behind a Sunni imam at all due to justice being one of the conditions as well as it being crucial that one prays correctly. Unfortunately our brothers who refer to themselves as Sunnis, perform both their salah and wudu in the incorrect way.

So when you choose a marja then you may check their ruling.

About the Sahaba, one can only respect the Sahaba who were PROVEN in history to be loyal to both the prophet Mohammad & his Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them all). In other cases we may assume the best of those Sahaba who have nothing bad reported about them in history.

It has been proven from the Quran and hadiths of both sects, that there existed many hypocrites among the Sahaba. In the authentic sources of the sect who refers to itself as ahlus sunnah, you’ll find the prophet Mohamamd (sawa) clearly saying that among his companions were hypocrites therefore, how can one respect all Sahaba?

For example, can one love Muawiyah who encouraged people to curse & insult Imam Ali?! Of course not! Therefore one would have to disassociate from such people despite them being 'companions'.

Can one love Umar who threatened to burn down the house of Fatima Al-Zahra (as) and imam Ali (as)?

As for those companions who are proven praise worthy, then you may show your love towards them.

If you research the above matters you will find various sources which mention the points I have summarised.

Ghadir Khumm . Imprecation

Who was cursed by Imam Ali (as) for refusing to witness the incident of Ghadeer which resulted in him becoming blind?

It is related al-Ash'ath ibn Qays (al-Amali, al-Saduq, p. 185) went blind for refusing to bear witness to what happened at Ghadeer.

Some also mention Zayd ibn Arqam although this might be in error.

I understand that it is narrated in Al-Kafi that the Quranic verse 5:3 was revealed on the day of Arafah. This contradicts the view of it being revealed after the Ghadeer sermon. How can this narration be explained?

This narration is weak and not authentic because of its narrator (Jafar al-Khuza'ee) is unknown and never been authenticated by any of our Ulama. Al-Majlisi in Baharul Anwaar mentioned that this narration is weak.

Al-Kho'ee in Mo'jam Rijal al-Hadeeth stated that the narrator ( Jafar Al-Khzaa'ee is unknown.

'The authentic narrations in all Shia books and many Sunni books stated that this verse was revealed on the Day of Ghadeer. (Al-Kafi 1:289, and 1:198)

Many Sunni scholars narrated authentic Hadeeths that this verse was revealed on the Day of Ghadeer e.g.

1.Al-Tabari in his book Al-Wilayah,

2, Ibn Oqdah.

3. Ibn Asaakir.

4. Ibn Mardawayh.

5. Al-Hafidh Abu Na'eem in his book (Maha Nazala Min al-Quran Fi Ali).

6. Al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi in Tareekh Baghdad 8:290 .

7.al-Hafidh al-Sijistani in his book al-Wikayah.

8. Al-Khawarizmi in al-Manaaqib:page 80.

9. al-Hamaweeni al-Hanafi in Faraa'id al-Simtayn in chapter 12.

No scholar can turn his face away from many authentic narrations and take instead a single weak narration.
