The ʿUmrah (Arabic: عُمرَة‎) is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Hijaz, Saudi Arabia, performed by Muslims that can be undertaken at any time of the year, in contrast to the Ḥajj (Arabic: حَـجّ‎) which has specific dates according to the Islamic lunar calendar. In Arabic, ‘Umrah means "to visit a populated place." In the Sharia, Umrah means to perform Tawaf round the Ka‘bah (Arabic: كَـعْـبَـة‎, 'Cube'), and Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, both after assuming Ihram (a sacred state). Ihram must be observed once traveling by land and passing a Miqat like Zu 'l-Hulafa, Juhfa, Qarnu 'l-Manāzil, Yalamlam, Zāt-i-'Irq, Ibrahīm Mursīa, or a place in al-Hill.

Our plan is to travel to Medina first for Umrah, but my mother will be in Makkah and I wish to visit her at her hotel. Is it permissible for me to enter Makkah without Ihram to meet her and then proceed to Medina to begin our Umrah?

According to our jurists, there are about twenty five prohibited acts during Ihram, and one of them is tadhleel, or being under a shade for a male during the day while travelling. This means a male cannot be directly under any shelter during the day time when travelling from the Miqat to Meccah al-Mukarramah, but then inside Meccah, he can.

In looking into the wisdom behind this, I have not come accross a reliable reference that explains this, but it seems that one possibility could be that it is a sign of humility. Instead of the person travelling with extravagence and comfort, he commences his spiritual journey of humbling himself by being under the sky.

What is the significance of Umrah? If it is not mandatory then why do people go for it?

Umrah is a very important worship which can be performed during any month in the year, not like Hajj which has its special time in the month of Thil Hijjah. Umrah Mofradah includes Tawaaf around the Ka'ba and Sa'ee between Safa and Marwah which was performed by all the Prophets and Unfallible Imams.

Umrah Mofradah has been mentioned in authentic Hadeeths and reward of it is the forgiveness of all the sins.

Is it necessary for a man to bare his right shoulder during Tawaf for Umrah Mofrada in Imami Fiqh? And is it necessary to wear two pieces of cloth as Ehram in such an Umrah?

It is not necessary for a man to bare his right shoulder during Tawaf. This is usually done by some Muslims who do not follow Ahlul Bayt (AS).

In state of Ehraam, it is necessary for man to avoid wearing any stitched cloth as it is forbidden on men during the state of Ehraam to wear any stitched cloth.

Where can I find out clear instructions on how to perform Umrah according to the Shi'a school of law?

Umrah has very clear and easy steps:

1. Wearing and starting the state of Ehram from Meeqaat which is any designated place for starting the Ehram. The Niyyah ( intention) should Ehram for Umrah Mofradah.

2. Performing Tawaf of Umrah Mofradah seven times around the Ka'ba.

3. Performing two Rak'at Salat al-Tawaf behind Maqam Ebramim.

4. Sa'ee ( walking) between Safa and Marwah seven times starting from Safa and ending in Marwah which is one round, then from Marwah to Safa, which will be the second round, then from Safa to Marwah and then back till completing the seventh round on Marwah.

5. Taqseer which cutting any part from your hair.

6. Tawaf Annisaa' which is shaven rounds around the Ka'ba.

7. Salat al-Tawaf behind Maqam Ebrahim.

I want to perform Umrah and Hajj but my husband does not want to perform it right now but rather intends to do so after a few years. Is it allowed for me to go without him and how can I do so?

There is a difference between Hajj and Umrah . Hajj is obligatory once in life while Umrah is recommended.

If Hajj has become obligatory on you (i.e. you are able financially and physically to perform Hajj) then it is obligatory on you to perform Hajj same year with out any delay even if your husband is not willing to perform it now. You will not be allowed to postpone performing Hajj because of your husband or any other reason as Hajj is Obligatory on you. You can join any trusted group of Hajj and go with them.

If our husband does not allow you to go for Umrah, you should obey him because Umrah is not obligatory but Mustahab (Recommended).

We should not conflate the reward of the Ziyaras or Hajj. Performing one does not mean we should not perform the other. Hajj has its specific times and the Ziyara of Imam Hussayn has a specific time. If you can afford to perform both, that would be great. Keep in mind, those who perform Hajj will also have the opportunity to visit RasulAllah, FatimaZahra, and the Imams in Baqee'.

With reference to Qur'an 48:25, can you explain the reasons that made the treaty of Hudaybiyyah better than fighting the Quraish and being able to perform Umrah?

The treaty of Hudaibiyyah aimed to save Muslims from the harm of the Infidels of Quraish. Fighting with the Infidels of Quraish at that time and situation was not useful at all for Muslims, that is why the Prophet (SAWA) made that treaty to safeguard the interest of Islam and Muslims.

The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah is very important event in the history of early Islam. After the signing of the treaty, the Quraysh of Mecca no longer considered Muhammad to be a rebel or a fugitive from Mecca. It also allowed the Muslims who were still in Makkah to practice Islam freely. In addition, the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah paved the way for many other tribes to make treaties with the Muslims and many Arab tribes to become near to Islam and ultimately become Muslims.

Is it compulsory to travel in an uncovered vehicle for Umra Mufradah, as finding an uncovered vehicle after Meeqat is difficult? And does it make a difference if the Umrah is done by night or by day?

It is not permissible for men during the state of Ehraam (Hajj or Umra) to travel in a covered vehicle during day time or when it is raining. This is according to all the scholars. Many scholars including Ayatullah Sistani say that it is permissible for men to travel in covered vehicle during night if there is no rain.

Women can travel in covered vehicle any time.

Obligatory Hajj is Must on every Muslim who can perform it and no other worship can replace it. Visitation to Karbala is very great but not in stead of obligatory Hajj.
