Martyrdom of Imam Ali al-Sajjad ('A) - Today in Muharram Day 25
Bismi-Llah, Al-Rahmani, Al-Rahim. On this day, the 25th of Muharam Al-haram, our fourth Imam, Imam Ali As-Sajjad, alayhi as-salam, was martyred. He was 57 years of age, and was poisoned by the 6th Umayyad ruler Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik. To understand what kind of a person Al-Walid was, the closest of people to him was the notorious As-Saffah, the blood thirsty Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf Ath-Thaqafi.
Imam As-Sajjad was very socially active, doing groundwork in improving the moral and spiritual states of the Muslim Ummah. He put all his effort introducing a unique dimension of Islam and we can see this in the many works in the books that we have from him, salamu Allahi 'alayh.
He was also extremely focused on charity work, assisting all those around him. He was so much known for his Ibadah that he was given the title of Zayn Al-'Abidin and because of his prolonged prostration, he was given the title of Sayyid as-Sajidin.
As we know, Imam As-Sajjad was in Karbala but survived becoming the next Imam and he lived after Karbala for another 35 years. In many narrations it says how he used to always remember Karbala and what befell upon the members of Ahl ul-Bayt, alayhum as-salam. It hurt him indeed very much and he had endured a lot as well from the time of Ashura becoming a captive and all the way after that also.
Imam As-Sajjad, Al-Madhlum, salamu Allahi 'alayh, was poisoned, as we mentioned, and then he was buried in Jannat ul-Baqi' cemetery, right next to his uncle, Imam Hasan Al-Nujtaba, alayhi as-salam.
"Kayf anta mamnu' ad-dukhuli li 'l-Baqi'. Kayf anta mamnu' ad-dukhuli li 'l-Baqi', wa mskin huna aynayka andar fi 'd-dumu'y. Jurmuka jurmun wadiun innaka Shi'i. Kayf anta mamnu' ad-dukhuli li 'l-Baqi'. Kayf anta mamnu' ad-dukhuli li 'l-Baqi'. wa mskin huna aynayka andar fi 'd-dumu'y Jurmuka jurmun wadiun innaka Shi'i. Kayf anta mamnu' ad-dukhuli li 'l-Baqi'.
As-salamu alayh, yawma walid, wa yama stushid, wa yawma yuba'thu hayya. I kindly request my brothers and sisters to recite Fatiha for the Marhoomin of those who sponsored this program.
Wa al-hamdulil-Lahi Rabbi al-'Alamin.
