No one is greater than Imam Ali (AS) but the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) who is the greatest among all the creatures of Allah including all the previous prophets. Imam Ali (AS) was the greatest after the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).

Why does Allah (swt) call the Prophet Muhammad (s) a Nabi in some verses of the Quran and Rasul in others?

Many scholars of Tafseer say that Allah (SWT) called the Prophet Muhammad as O Messenger in very important matters which are related to conveying the message of Islam (Osool Al-Deen) while called him as O Prophet in matters which are related to day to day rules and regulations (Foroo' Al-Deen).

What is the difference between a Rasool and a Nabi?

The prophets are 124000, while the Rasools (Messengers) are 313 only out of all the prophets. Every messenger is a prophet but no vice versa.

Rasool (messenger) is higher in degree than Nabi, because Nabi gets revelations and teachings from Allah (SWT) to guide him with out a message to convey, while Rasool gets revelations and message to convey to others.
