Whenever I try to do a good deed I get feelings of pride and superiority like I am better than a few people as they aren't doing this particular thing? What can I do to minimize such feelings?
Our worst enemy; Shaitan, keeps on trying to harm us in every situation even after doing good deeds by making us feel proud and whispering to us that we are better than others. This is a very harmful feeling which can cause us lot of loss of spirituality and can cause holding us from doing more good and even losing our reward in case of thinking that we are making favor on Allah by our deeds.
Hadeeth says: A sin which annoys you is better for you than a good deed which makes you feel proud. سيئة تسوؤك خير من حسنة تُعجِبُك
We need to remember few facts to tackle this very bad situation:
1. Whatever good we do is a bounty from Allah on us and we can never do any good without His help, so, we need to thank Him for His great bounties on us and be more humble to Him.
2. We need to remember our previous sins, mistakes and errors and never forget seeking forgiveness.
3. We don't know our future whether we will continue doing good or no. Many people deviated after they were doing very good deeds. We need to seek from Allah to keep us on the Right Path and protect us from deviation. RABBAN LA TOZIGH QOLOUBANA BA'DA ITH HADAITANA رَبَّنا لا تُزِغ قُلوبَنا بَعدَ إذ هَدَيتَنا
4. It is very useful to prostrate in Sojood and thank Allah and seek forgiveness and His protection from Satanic thoughts. Longer Sojood gives more humbleness and greater benefits.
5. Remember the prophets and Infallible Ahlul Bayt who did the best of worshipping of Allah still were the most humble and most grateful to Allah and never felt proud or superior. That is because they are really the servants of Allah.
Wassalam.
