Some of our Sunni brothers have this view that praying Fatiha for the dead or finishing of Quran is of no use. Can you please shed some light on this concept and specially why is the reciting of Surah Fatiha so prevalent for the deceased?
This claim is not from Sunni Muslims but from Wahabi sect. Sunni and Shia scholars believe that reciting any Quranic verses or chapters and gifting its reward to the deceased helps the deceased as well as the reciter. Fatwa centre in Egypt ( Daar Al-Iftaa' Al-Masriah دار الإفتاء المصرية) has published a verdict (Fatwa) in Al-Watan newspaper confirming this.
'Wassalam.
