What was Abu Lahab's religion? Why did he oppose Islam when his father and brothers were followers of the religion of Ibrahim which did not allow worshiping idols?
Abu Lahab's name is Abdul Ozza ibn Abdul Muttalib Ibn Hashim. He was a step brother of Abdullah, the father of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA). He had bad relationship with Abu Talib which might be one of the reasons of his negative attitude against the Prophet (SAWA) who was fully supported by Abu Talib (AS). His wife was Um Jameel , from Bani Umayya family who were always against the Prophet and Abu Talib
Obviously, his father Abdul Muttalib (AS) was a great believer and follower of Ebraheem (AS) but Abu Lahab was a bad and disobedient son of his father. His jealousy was behind his evil acts against the Prophet, keeping in mind his evil wife who was instigating him against the Prophet (SAWA).
'When the Prophet invited his near family members and informed and called them to Islam, then announced that Ali will be his successor and deputy, Abu Lahab tried to degrade Abu Talib (his opponent) by telling him in front of others: He (The Prophet) made your son above you لقد أمّر عليك ابنك
