If there is explicit evidence that Imam ‘Ali refused to give Bayʿah, in both word and action, how was that refusal received by the first caliphs? And how do we reconcile that refusal with his later cooperation in the affairs of the Muslim community?
Is there any direct, clear-cut, explicit, and strong evidence that Imam ‘Ali (as) rejected giving bayʿah to the first three caliphs?
I ask this because, for example, we know that Imam Husayn (as) openly rejected the bayʿah of Yazid and was willing to give his life for that stance. So when I hear that Imam ‘Ali was forced to give bayʿah, I struggle to understand it logically.
If Imam ‘Ali was divinely appointed at Ghadir Khumm and is considered infallible (maʿṣūm), how could he choose to give allegiance to someone who was not chosen by Allah? Wouldn’t that imply either he accepted a leadership God didn’t appoint, or that political pressure overrode divine will — which contradicts his infallibility?
Also, if Imam ‘Ali did not give bayʿah, how did Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān respond to that? Historical records show that Imam ‘Ali still worked with them in matters of state and public affairs — so does that mean there was no enmity or open disagreement?
Ultimately, if Allah chose Imam ‘Ali as the rightful successor, then the legitimacy of the first three caliphs would be in question. So what I’m really looking for is:
- Explicit evidence that Imam ‘Ali refused to give bayʿah (in both word and action),
- How that refusal was received by the first caliphs, and
- How we reconcile that refusal with his later cooperation in the affairs of the Muslim community.
Ameerul Mo'mineen Ali (AS) never gave Bay'ah (Alegiance) to any wrongdoer. He never attended Jum'a nor Jama'ah with the three "Caliphs" as it is confirmed by leading Sunni scholar Al-Dhahabi in Siyar A'lam Al-Nobalaa' , V. 9, Page 284
Ameerul Mo'mineen supported and helped the Muslim Ummah against the enemies, but he never supported the Caliphs. Al-Shaqshaqiyyah sermon explains what he did and why and what the three Caliphs befor him did.
