Nature . Man

What is the nature, essence and consequence of man?

Human beings were created like all creature by The Creator, Allah, The Most Merciful to shower on them His Mercy. The nature of human beings contains body and soul نفس and spirit روح.

Human beings have the gift of intellect which makes them better than most of other creatures. Allah says in Quran: Verily, We Have honoured the children of Adam and carried them on land and sea and provided them with nice things and preferred then on many of our creatures) 17: 70.

The essence of human beings is greater than the understanding of many people who look to outside of man without understanding of the inner of human beings. That is why we find in authentic Hadeeths lot of emphasis on understanding ourselves. Even in Quran we read: O those who believe, focus on yourselves. (Sura 5, verse 7). The Prophetic Hadeeth says: The person who knows himself has known indeed his Lord.

The intellectual abilities of human beings are much greater than what is used by majority of people.

Consequence of man in his future both the short term future in this life and long term future in the hereafter depends on his faith and deeds. Those who believe in the main facts of life e.g. Tawheed, prophet hood, Imamate etc and act upon these facts, will gain continuous happiness and vice versa.

When a man has intercourse with his wife, then should he only do Ghusl or do Wudu as well?

After a man engages in intercourse with his wife, he'll be in a state of spiritual impurity. So in order for him to be in a state of purity again, he just needs to perform the ghusl al Janaba and this will also give make him in the state wudu as well, so no need to do wudu.

If however during the ghusl or after he would do an action which would break wudu, then he would have to repeat the wudu again and not the ghusl.

Is it permissible for me to think of another man while still being married, but contemplating divorce, as long as I do not participate in any inappropriate behavior with him?

When you are still married, you are not allowed to think of another man at all. Even talking on phone or messaging him or any way of contact is not allowed. After you get your Islamic divorce and pass the Idda period after Talaq, then you will be allowed to do that.

A Muslim convert man with a Christian family wants to marry a Muslim girl. Is it allowed for her to get married to that man?

If all other shar'i requirements are met, yes, she can marry that man.

The marriage proposal must take its normal procedure, primarily around the parents giving their consent and their blessings. This is the most important part.

A second important step is to see the character traits of the person, their moral standards, their family, compatibility, etc.

A third step to take is seeking consultation and advice, trying to find out if this prospect marriage is a good idea, and the obstacles they might face. This is necessary for any case of marriage, Muslim born, or convert.

Both of them should study this from all its angles, for the sake of making the right decision and having a successful marriage.

Shorts . Man

Can men wear shorts which do not reach the knee?

Bismihi ta'ala

From a fiqhi perspective, a male is allowed to wear shorts, even if it is above his knees.

In Sunni fiqh, according to most of their madhhabs, the knee is considered to be included in the private parts ('awra), so it must all be covered, from the naval to the knees.

However, according to the Shi'i Ja'fari school of thought, the only wajib part to cover is the private parts alone, front and back.

If a male prays in shorts, the prayer will be valid, although it is not very much advisable to do so, as we must honour the prayer and present ourselves to the Almighty in the most dignified and elegant way possible. That's why, for example, it's so mustahab to use perfume before praying, and so on.

As for going out in public with shorts, whether they reach the knees or above the knees, this would depend on the society that you live in. For sports or swimming there would not be any issue, but outside of sports, or swimming, we must take into strong consideration whether it is socially acceptable or not.

This is also where the topic of libas al-shuhra would be discussed, and we can leave that for another time.

If one lives in a non-Muslim society, it does not mean he abandons his religious appearance or cultural upbringing, or changes his moral standards. A male also has a form of hijab and modesty, and he must observe this as much as possible.

Is it appropriate for a pious mu'min to be seen wearing shorts casually in public? Most people would answer with a no. A mu'min always sets high standards for himself, and tries to represent his faith and religion in the best form possible, all the time.

Eyebrow tattoo is not forbidden if it does not contain a name of Allah or Quranic word holy name of any of the Infallible (according to precaution). It should not make the man look like women.

My husband, although a good man, uses a lot swear words. I don’t want my kids to be like him. What should I do?

1. Always try to cool him down and never cause him to be angry.

2. Talk to him frankly about the his thoughts on the effect of swear words on your kids.
3. He might need an advice from experts in anger control.

4. His near friends and relatives might be able to advise him on the damaging effect of swear words in the children.

5. Remind him if you feel that he might listen about what the Prophet (SAWA) and Ahlul Bayt (AS) said about anger and swear words and the fact that every word from us is recorded on us.
