Chapter 18: Quranic Verses About Imam Al-Husayn's ('A) Martyrdom And Avenging His Blood
Tradition 1: Imam As-Sadiq (‘a) said under the explanation of the verse:
وَقَضَيْنَا إِلَىٰ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ فِي الْكِتَابِ لَتُفْسِدُنَّ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَرَّتَيْنِ
“And We had made known to the children of Israel in the Book: Most certainly you will make mischief in the land twice…” (17:4).
The first “mischief” refers to the slaying of Amir Al-Mu’minin ('a) and the second refers to verbal attack on Imam Al-Hasan ('a).
وَلَتَعْلُنَّ عُلُوًّا كَبِيرًا
“…And you will behave insolently with great insolence” (17:4).
Refers to the martyrdom of Imam Al-Husayn ('a).
فَإِذَا جَاءَ وَعْدُ
“So when the promise for the first of the two came” (17:5).
Refers to the time when the avenger for the blood of Imam Al-Husayn ('a) will arrive.
بَعَثْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ عِبَادًا لَنَا أُولِي بَأْسٍ شَدِيدٍ فَجَاسُوا خِلَالَ الدِّيَارِ
“We sent over you Our servants, of mighty prowess, so they went to and fro among the houses” (17:5)
Refers to a group which will rise before the time of Qa’im ('a) and kill anyone who participated in shedding the blood of Aali Muhammad ('a).
وَكَانَ وَعْدًا مَفْعُولًا
“And it was a promise to be accomplished” (17:5).
Tradition 2: Imam Al-Baqir ('a) recited the verse of,
إِنَّا لَنَنْصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْأَشْهَادُ
“Most surely, We help Our apostles and those who believe, in this world's life and on the day when the witnesses shall stand up” (40:51).
Then said, “Imam Al-Husayn Ibn Ali ('a) is of those described in this verse who has yet to be helped! By Allah, the killers of Imam Al-Husayn ('a) were killed but no one has avenged his blood yet.”
Tradition 3: Imam As-Sadiq (‘a) explained the following verse,
وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ
“And when the female infant buried alive is asked” (81:8).
بِأَيِّ ذَنْبٍ قُتِلَتْ
“For what sin she was killed” (81:9).
By saying, “This verse was revealed about Husayn Ibn Ali ('a).”
Tradition 4: Imam Al-Baqir ('a) explained the verse,
أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا ۚ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَدِيرٌ
“Permission (to fight) is given to those upon whom war is made because they are oppressed and most surely Allah is well able to assist them” (22:39).
That “They are Ali, Hasan and Husayn ('a).”
Tradition 5: The narrator asked Imam As-Sadiq (‘a) about the verse,
وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۗ وَمَنْ قُتِلَ مَظْلُومًا فَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا لِوَلِيِّهِ سُلْطَانًا فَلَا يُسْرِفْ فِي الْقَتْلِ ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ مَنْصُورًا
“And do not kill anyone whom Allah has forbidden, except for a just cause, and whoever is slain unjustly, We have indeed, given to his heir authority, so let him not exceed the just limits in slaying; surely he is aided” (17:33).
Imam ('a) said: It is about the Qa’im of Aali Muhammad ('a). When he rises, he will eliminate many, avenging the blood of Imam Al-Husayn ('a). Even if he eliminates the inhabitants of the earth, he will not have exceeded the limits.
فَلَا يُسْرِفْ فِي الْقَتْلِ
“So let him not exceed the just limits in slaying” (17:33).
Means that he will not act in a way that can be construed as excess. By Allah he will eliminate the descendants of the killers of Imam Al-Husayn ('a) for the deeds of their ancestors.
Tradition 6: Imam As-Sadiq (‘a) said, “In the verse,
فَلَا عُدْوَانَ إِلَّا عَلَى الظَّالِمِينَ
“Then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors” (2:193).
'oppressors' refers to the descendants of the killers of Imam Al-Husayn ('a).
