Which Maqtal (Story Of Karbala) To Read?

As-salamu alaykum wa Rahmat Ullah. Which Maqtal or which book do I recommend about the event of the 10th of Muharram? I would say we'd go back to the origin, the Maqtal of Abu Mikhnaf. Abu Mikhnaf died in 157 after Hijra. He was alive shortly after the events of Karbala. He would have met people who were at Karbala. I would say that, try and get hold of the Marteloborne. It's available in English, translated.

I think one version was translated by Yasin Al-Jinouri and another was translated by Mansour Limba. So I definitely recommend the Maqtal of Abu Mikhnaf. I'll give you an understanding of the events of the tenth of Muharram. Is it going to be 100% accurate? Not necessarily.

Has there been an attempt to restore Abu Mikhnaf? I think there has been, because there have been a number of accusations as to the reliability and veracity. But definitely the Maqtal of Abu Mikhnaf is where you begin. I would also say that Ansariyan Publications have one particular book which was very helpful for me, and that was called The Tragic Saga of Karbala. he Tragic Saga of Karbala, published by Ansariyan Publications in Qum.

And that really gives you a wonderful narrative of the journey to Karbala and the aftermath of what took place in Kufa and Sham. I would definitely recommend those two works. Wa as-salamu alaykum, wa Rahmat Ullah.
